The Silent Epidemic: How Your Posture Impacts Your Health

Have you ever wondered why so many people suffer from neck pain, headaches, and lower back issues? At OWL Chiropractic, we see a recurring pattern in our patients, a biomechanical compensation (aka, your posture) that affects a staggering 90% of them. It's a silent epidemic that starts with a simple shift in your spine.
The Domino Effect: From Neck to Pelvis
It often begins with a subluxation in the cervical spine. This misalignment causes the natural curve of your neck to straighten, pushing your head forward. This seemingly small change has a significant impact. Imagine your head, which weighs around 10-12 pounds, shifting forward. This puts immense stress on your spinal cord, brain stem, and neck muscles. In fact, for each inch your head goes forwards it adds an extra 10 pounds of pressure to these vital areas. At OWL Chiropractic we see most people range from 0.5 to 1.5 inches of forward head posture.
Over time, your body, in its infinite wisdom, attempts to compensate. To keep your head aligned over your pelvis, your pelvis starts to rock backward, bringing your pubic bone forward. This, in turn, straightens your lumbar spine, placing undue pressure on the nerves in your lower back and straining the muscles there.
But there's more. As we lose those vital spinal curves, the weakened spine becomes susceptible to further imbalances. Notably, due to right-handed dominance in most individuals, the spine is often pulled off its vertical center to the right. This creates a twist in the cervicothoracic (CT) junction area, often resulting in a right rotational lock. This added torsion compounds the existing issues, leading to increased pain and dysfunction throughout the body.

The Modern Culprit: Prolonged Sitting and Right-Handed Habits
To make matters worse, our modern lifestyle often involves prolonged sitting. This leads to the shortening of the psoas and hip flexor muscles, further exacerbating the pelvic tilt and lumbar strain. Combined with the repetitive right-handed tasks many of us perform daily, the rightward twist becomes a common and significant factor in spinal health.
The Loss of Curves, the Loss of Stability, and the Rotational Lock
The natural curves of your spine are essential for its stability and shock absorption. When these curves are lost, and a rotational lock is added, your spine becomes weaker and more vulnerable to injury. This weakness manifests as pain, dysfunction, and a noticeable asymmetry in posture.
You Must Identify In Order To Rectify
Recognizing this pattern is the first step towards addressing it. At OWL Chiropractic we utilize infrared thermography and digital motion X-rays to not only identify the specific compensation partners in your spine but also to understand how and when to adjust each segment. While 90% of patients fall into this compensation pattern, they all have unique nuances that need to be addressed correctly to get biomechanical and structural correction.
Why OWL Addresses the Entire Spine
This compensation pattern is one of the reasons we take full spine X-rays at OWL Chiropractic, even if the patient only has low back pain. We find a significant amount of low back pain is related to the previously described compensation pattern, which means we need to address the neck as well as the pelvis in order to fix the actual problem. If we only adjusted the lower back and ignored the forward head posture, the lumbar spine would simply be pulled back into compensation over and over again.

What Can You Do?
Here are some key strategies for correcting this common compensation pattern:
Chiropractic Care: Regular customized adjustments can help restore proper alignment and function to your spine.
Posture Correction: Be mindful of your posture, especially when sitting and performing right-handed tasks.
Stretching and Exercise: Focus on exercises that strengthen your core, and stretch your hip flexors and chest muscles while strengthening your glutes and upper back.
Ergonomics: Ensure your workspace is ergonomically sound, and consider adjustments to minimize right-handed strain.
Movement and Symmetry: Avoid prolonged sitting and incorporate activities that promote balanced movement.
